Today I took on the City of Phoenix Mayor’s office, I tackled what the FBI @ U.S. Attorney’s office wanted of me, I rubbed elbows with the tops at Greenberg & Traurig while reviewing some profound options, and to top it off, a social media damage control blitz was required to save face on a passionate initiative I’m with. Phoenix Entrepreneurial Community is Worth Looking At

Some of the battle with investor attention in Phoenix has to do also with the self-defeating nature of ourselves regarding our home. I have been with one great local tech startup, ReplyBuy.com, and was very near others like Addoway.com. It seems many of us find establishing ourselves in Phoenix a non-starter. The plan of Phoenix tech business pioneers is to start here, move to Silicon Valley as quickly as possible, and never look back. There is no thought entering the heads of leadership that operations should be established here. In my experience, there was no hope of having roots in Phoenix because investors weren’t even given the chance to approve or suggest otherwise - it was offered up front, even pressed, that upon investment, offices would be set up in the Bay Area. Further, many feel that being located in Phoenix is a fundamental detriment and they would move immediately given the chance. They feel the hope of investment at all is nil based simply on the fact that they are currently located here.

It is my hope that the fruit of my efforts in this cause will include a sense of pride and empowerment among the entrepreneurs, tech or otherwise, regarding our Phoenix-based operations. Great ideas, great people and great teams are what’s needed. Tech entrepreneurs are largely free to succeed wherever they are, even in Phoenix!

The documentary I AM well articulates the real problem of the United States and the world. It suggests also what’s right with the world and offers solutions. Fundamentally, we are all connected to each other and everything. That connection is the foundation of our well-being, progress, success and failure.

We are amidst a cultural phenomenon that lends to our separation from each other. The increasing isolation, selfishness, everyone-for-themselves attitude is contributing immensely to the social and political problems of this age. The whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts and the part’s when separated are inverse to the success of the whole.

My current focus of reading and study offer tastes of what makes us great when we are together and open. These concepts are where the solutions are. Read Wikinomics and Macrowikinomics, understand what Steve Case of Revolution means when he speaks of the Sharing Economy. Further, it’s my experience with non-profits that first opened me to the benefits gained by focusing outward rather than inward. Go volunteer and see for yourself how we all benefit, yourself included, by the attitude. I call it the Chinese Finger Trap effect; the more you pull the worse your situation gets. If you pause, think and push instead, you’ve found freedom.

When you’re done opening your eyes, come back and see how we shape our world for the better. Start by identifying what’s worse off and focus there first. I suggest looking at politics even if you are like me and generally obstain, with perhaps the exception of the basics such as voting. There is a deep seated culture in there and it’s going to take something big to change it. However, you don’t have to march or hold a picket sign if that’s not your style. Start by understanding the problem and then work from there.
